Let’s work together to be a part of the larger conversation of energy efficiency and celebrate environmental friendliness and sustainability. Empower your children with the knowledge to make our world a better place to live. With that concept, OWI has fabricated an intricate magnetic levitation train kit to engage curiosity and awareness.

It’s amazing, without wheels, OWI’s Magnetic Levitation Express uses magnetic levitation technology. Electromagnet, propulsion magnets and levitation magnets are used to create propulsion. These scientifically placed magnetic strips are built in the side of guide-way (included) to allow the Magnetic Levitation Express to hover stably and run smoothly at high speeds.  After building the 10.87 inch x 1.44 inch x 1.17 inch train kit and 29 inch x 17.72” x 1.34” rail kit, the user can learn the basic principles of how magnets repel and attract each other. It is ideal for a do-it-yourself science fair, after-school, or summer workshop project with the bonus gift of learning electro-magnetic theory. Experts believe that the retention of child’s learning experience is multiplied if they can coordinate reading with actual hands on experience. With only 155 assembly parts, it’s a wonderful instrument for the beginner enthusiast 8 years and up, and a gateway to ignite opportunities in fun-learning.

Wikikipedia says, “Shanghai has the first commercially operated high-speed magnetic levitation line in the world. The top operational commercial speed of this train is 431 km/h (268 mph), making it the world’s fastest train in regular commercial service since it s opening in April 2004.” Magnetic Levitation Express is the best choice for children to experiment how Maglev trains are built and work. Speed, pollution-free, and quiet, Magnetic Levitation Express is tomorrow’s technology in use today.

    Magnetic Levitation Train

Posted by M. Rigsby on 4th Jul 2017

If you want an operating magnetic levitation train (without spending several hundred dollars for a "linear liner"--and $140. more for shipping from Japan), then this product deserves consideration.

This is a kit and it requires about 4 hours of labor to assemble. The instructions are excellent and the components fit together well (no forcing, drilling, gluing or adjusting needed). You will need two "AAA" batteries, a phillips screwdriver (small point) and diagonal cutters (to separate the parts from the molds). Mostly, it just requires time and patience to assemble. For example, there are over 50 "strip magnets" that have to be separated, backing removed, then carefully attached to channels in the track and wall--this is not hard, it just has to be done in a craftsman like manner.

When complete, turn the train on and move it left or right (the train will not self start). In "mode #1," the train will zip around for about 90 seconds then stop--waiting on another push to start again. In "mode #2" you can choose from slow, medium or fast (watch the speed of the blinking led) and push the train left or right to start. The train will run until you stop it or the batteries run down (about two hours according to the manual).

In fast mode, the train will circle the track in about two seconds. The train does float (about 3/16 inch above the track) and pushes inward toward the clear inside wall. Small wheels touch the inside wall, so there is "wheel friction" as well as "air friction," but it moves very freely.

To summarize, the parts and instructions are good--if you take your time and pay attention, you'll have a well made toy (and there is satisfaction from "doing it yourself").
